Degree Overview
The course focuses on primary care and community nursing, giving you the skills to provide exceptional care in a range of settings to support the needs of people in the community. You will learn in brand new teaching facilities from expert clinical and academic staff and in a wide range of clinical placements. You will receive excellent support to ensure you achieve both academic and professional success. To support you through your studies, we offer in-person and online study support, wellbeing services and careers advice. We also provide financial support for students. Home Nursing students also receive a non-repayable payment of £5,000 each academic year from the NHS, with additional support available. On successful completion of the course you will be eligible to apply for registration as an Adult Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Your learning on the programme will be split between theory in the classroom and clinical practice in a range of placements and in the Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC).
You’ll develop your theoretical knowledge through lectures, seminars, group work, guided independent study, online learning, reflective practice and a variety of assignments. You will be taught by expert staff and learn alongside nursing students and students from other health and care professions. You will gain practical skills and experience through a range of clinical placements, such as community nursing (district nurses), primary care (general practice nurses), public health nursing (health visitors), care homes, hospices, rehabilitation centres and acute hospitals. You will be supported, supervised and assessed during placements by both clinical and academic staff. You will also spend a significant amount of time learning in our new Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC). These brand-new facilities include realistic community and in-hospital settings.
Here you will safely practise clinical skills with other students, service users, carers, role players and hi-tech patient simulators under the guidance of experienced clinical and academic staff. You will also have the opportunity to organise an elective placement in the UK or abroad. During your three years, you will demonstrate achievement of the NMC Standards of proficiency for registered nurses. You will also develop the values and behaviours that underpin the NHS Constitution, such as putting service users at the centre of their care and treating people with compassion, respect and dignity.
You will learn about nursing as a profession and its central role within 21st century health and care services. You will also learn about the shift towards integrated care in the community as part of the NHS Long Term Plan. You will learn about the importance of developing professional relationships with the people you are caring for and working with. Clinical practice will help you develop confidence in communicating with a diverse range of people. You will also develop resilience through reflective practice.
